Fetal Medical Unit

The lady who delivered the deformed fetus the night I was on call, came today complaining to Prof. Hassan Nasrat about the abortion laws in Saudi. The poor thing had to deliver two other fetuses with congenital anomalies whom were also incompatible with life. She was crying and showing him pictures of her dead baby. She asked for them to use this gift of science & knowledge to actually do something. The pregnancy should have been terminated & she shouldn't have had to carry those fetuses as long as she did. But of course the doctors didn't abort because our inhumane religious men told her and I quote: "at8y Allah ya o5ty hady nfs bshriah". Really? Well, they didn't look human and they died right after birth.

After she left, the Prof. said the laws are now looser but some doctors still don't feel comfortable using them. I thought our job as doctors was first to inflict no harm? I thought we should weigh the pros and cons and decide on the proper management? And how is it proper to lead a full term pregnancy with all it's known complications to the mother's body & psychological trauma, knowing that the out come is a dead baby?

And that is why I could never be an obstetrician. Too much ethical & so called religious shit.

First On Call

First On Call- The Can't Wait to Get Home & Sob edition. Or First On Call- The Bitter-sweet edition.

I'm sure you gathered that it was my first on call with the OB/GYN department and actually first ever! It was a true roller-coaster. From the genuine smiles to the kill-me-now-I-can't-look-the-patient's-family-in-the-eyes-moments.

The day started extra early -at 8 am. - because I'm lucky like that. Normal day routine till 4 then the shift begins. What happened?
  1. An allegedly fully dilated pregnant lady who we wait 6 hours for her to deliver and she doesn't.
  2. A lady who suddenly comes to the ER and delivers spontaneously. Her mother's worries during and joyful relief after. The dad's smile when he first knew about his son. All get to you. OB can be a real crowd pleaser.
  3. And then it can be the complete opposite. When the woman whom's fetus was mal-positioned and so needed a C-section to then be delivered dead. When the woman's family asks you how it went and you go to find out and decide to disappear till the doctor tells them. When he does and their happy expecting faces turn dull. When you watch them go see the dead fetus. When you go see it yourself, an other wise normal baby but dead. When you fight the urge to sob. When you see the doctors going through every detail, trying to figure out what went wrong. When you see tears and utter pain in the eyes of the doctors. That's when OB totally sucks.
  4. And it doesn't end there. Two of my friends who also witnessed the previous tragedy, witnessed another. Another C-section with a fetus incompatible with life. A fetus so deformed, I'm actually glad I didn't see. God be with those mothers and their families. And may they be granted healthy babies in the future who would live long and make them proud.
  5. God sent us a reason to smile. This little boy Bander, who we met at the vending machines earlier, decides to break dance for us with his friend. And guess what they are actually good. They got a standing ovation from us.
  6. There's a cat which lives in the hospital's cafeteria. Only comes out after hours.

Vampires Suck

No, I'm not talking about the movie. Though I can't wait to see it.

I am talking about all the little holes and flaws made in the idea of them. Don't get me wrong I love watching True Blood and The Vampire Diaries and I love to think that maybe vampires really do exist -don't you dare make fun of me- but I just can't let go of all the biological crap.
For instance in TVD,when a vamp wants to save a human's life and he feeds him from his blood and then say "it'll pass through your system in a few days". What? How in the world? Last time I checked we human beings do NOT sweat blood and unless you are a woman and will get your period in the next few days, I don't see how this blood will pass through your system. Which then brings us to True Blood, the blood NEVER passes through your system? If you had some of the vamp's blood, you'll always have his blood in you and you'll be connected for life. Dude, red blood cells life span is 120 days. The connection should only last that long, dumb ass.

And another thing what's up with the lame ass vampire always getting the special girl and the HOT, awesome, fantastic vampire always falling in love with her but can never have her cuz he is "bad" and plus she is madly in love with her tormented vamp. But wait a sec why is this vamp so tormented in the first place? I though he has no soul?
And how come vampires' love is so strong and undying? Yet again I thought they had no souls? Are you telling me, that for a love to be true and everlasting it should be soul-less? No, wait. Now I'm confused. What is a soul anyway? I'll Google it.

Plato, drawing on the words of his teacher Socrates, considered the soul as the essence of a person, being, that which decides how we behave. He considered this essence as an incorporeal, eternal occupant of our being. As bodies die the soul is continually reborn in subsequent bodies. The Platonic soul comprises three parts:

  1. the logos (mind, nous, or reason)
  2. the thymos (emotion, or spiritedness, or masculine)
  3. the eros (appetitive, or desire, or feminine)

Each of these has a function in a balanced and peaceful soul.

Shit! I don't care what you say, according to Plato them vampires got souls. Or they are really alive and not dead as they claim? Is being a vamp just another way of being? Which brings me to another flaw in the plot. You say they are dead. Their hearts don't beat. So blood is not being pumped to their organs. But yet they bleed, cry blood, and have erections. Weird. I could let it drop it by saying they maybe are engorged with blood and male vampires are running around with a hard one all night. OK? Seriously vampires suck!

But we still love them xD

Damon Salvatore from TVD. Bless his non-beating heart. In one scene he was reading Twilight and he said they got it all wrong or something. And that's why they suck and don't even qualify to be called vampires.

And an even better reason to love and to forget all about the suckniess

Eric Northman from True Blood. He'll make you want to jump out of your skin

I watch too much TV :/

No Eid For Jeddah

That rain ended up in a disaster. I guess it was more of a punishment than a blessing. People, cars, houses, for God sakes HOSPITALS DROWNED. The situation is so screwed up. And they expect 4 more days of rain & floods. People are asked by the civil defense, not to leave their houses.

KAUH hospital. My hospital. Drowned. The basement floor drowned. No electricity. No nothing. People are dying. I have heard that its been evacuated.

National Guard Hospital, announced code black.

I seriously can't focus my thoughts. If you want to read some more, here & here.

Allah yr7m all the people who have died in this tragedy. My heart goes to their families & to the people in Makkah.

I believe it was a punishment from Allah to some & to show us how really screwed up things are. I hope we wake up before further damage happens & for the people who are responsible to be held accountable.

يا رب ألطف بنا و اعفو عنا أنت أرحم الراحمين
